- hoodie—the duo of Special Guest DJ and Naemi—and James K all got their respective starts in a clubby corner of the ambient music scene. But this past year has found those artists embracing more varied sounds. The three musicians have teamed up for the ten-inch, 065 (Scorpio), on AD 93. On "Scorpio," James K's melancholy lyrics about romance float over silvery electric guitar strums and a swaggering trip-hop groove. The aptly-titled back half, "Ether," uses airy vocals and deep synth pads to conjure a downy, freeform zone. It’s some of the most approachable work to emerge from the greater 3XL universe yet, tugging at a latent pop sensibility first revealed by hoodie's early post-rock and emo-influenced releases.
