  • Matthew Herbert revived his Wishmountain alias with an album last year that featured samples recorded at an old coal mine in Essen. The result was a rigid, metallic kind of techno, like Construction Time Again brought to its logical end. Now as part of a Wishmountain reissue campaign, Herbert releases three remixes of tracks from that album that live up to the imagination of the LP with the addition of some welcome colour. rEmPiT g0dDe$$ seizes on the heave-ho of the original "Headrush" for a twitching rework that almost touches on dubstep, while Berk Offset massages it into a wonky house track with a tunnelling LFO bassline. Ancient Methods steals the show with his version of "Hammer," which pulls apart Herbert's original samples like taffy, keeping the original's coarse metallic sounds but upping the ante with some truly futuristic sound design, like a 2023 techno cut made out of iron and wire.
