  • Kontronatura's music begins with his research. "When I started my career as a DJ I was part of a collective whose curatorial premise was to research and play only music by Black producers," he told Refraction in 2022. As a resident of the wildly popular São Paulo party Mamba Negra, his practice is intimately embedded in an insurgent scene that is explicitly queer and anti-patriarchy. In a country that, up until recently, was led by an aggressively conservative government, the easiest way to communicate sonic protest is through rage. On his debut EP, ORI, both new and traditional sounds become media for his message. "OKI" is heavy-handed hard drum, loaded with funk carioca vocal signifiers and distorted ribbets. "BIYI" incorporates drum sounds that sound like they could fit somewhere in between techno, baile funk and carnival festivities. Echoing house pads add slight melancholy, an element further teased in a RHR dub mix that muffles the original's percussion and spreads a relaxed ambiance like butter.
