- To celebrate an incredible 30 years since its founding in Birmingham, House Of God is flexing its muscles with a massive compilation that pairs archival tracks with new cuts from some of its most beloved residents and esteemed guests. Surgeon, who cut his teeth at House Of God, contributes a new song that could easily date back to the '90s.
"Should Really Know Better By Now" pairs the belligerence of his oldest work with the expansive space and textural variety of his most recent album, Crash Recoil. This one bounds forward with a playful bounce, and a distorted vocal sample that adds just a hint of hard techno camp, though as a whole the track is surprisingly approachable, even funky. On the compilation, it's followed immediately by "Badger Bite," whose tightly coiled groove reminds us how brilliant Surgeon was 30-odd years ago—but also how far he's come in the time since.
