Youandewan - Cheap Lust

  • Understated funk from the modular master.

  • Youandewan has perfected an approach to contemporary tech house. The drums skip like nimble jump ropers and the modular melodies are always a bit melancholy (even when he's banging it out), though it's the basslines where the magic really is: it's like you can watch the bass waveform being contorted in real time as it modulates across the stereo spectrum. His latest release is no different. Restarting his dormant The Brane label with a split EP alongside rising star Velvet Velour, the highlight is "Cheap Lust." If it wasn't for the skipping, swung drums, the first three minutes could be a deep house track similar to Youandewan's Aus Music days. But then that bassline hits, expanding and contracting like someone going to town on a helium pump at a kid's birthday party.
