  • On his latest EP, for Berlin's Mechatronica, Troels Baunbæk-Knudsen turns to electro and sets the whole thing on fire until what's left is a burning mass of twisted metal. The title track is one of the EP's best, with a hybrid rhythm that sputters and stomps, and almost frightening mechanical sounds that whirr and catch like broken motors. The result feels chrome-plated and futuristic—especially on another highlight, "You Win," with its uncomfortably cutting metallic sounds—though not exactly in an appealing way. Instead, The Wash brings to mind a future ruled entirely by machines, a kind of electro that folds in the menace of techstep and holds back the macho aggression in favour of something much more sinister.
