Courtesy - You're Not Alone feat. Erika de Casier and August Rosenbaum

  • An "ambient trance" cover of an Olive trip-hop classic.

  • It's easy to see why Courtesy would want to cover British trip-hop trio Olive's 1996 classic, "You're Not Alone." For the first minute and a half of the track (before the breakbeat drops), quivering synth lines and trance chords hover beatlessly beneath Robin Taylor-Firth's lovesick falsetto. If this isn't "ambient trance," then I don't know what is. In her cover, the second single from her forthcoming debut LP, fra eufori, she turns the pathos up to 11 and then some. Courtesy keeps the pulsing chords but kills the beat, instead building up to twinkling piano crescendos (courtesy of August Rosenbaum) that have the ephemeral splendor of fading phosphenes as you open your eyes. Erika de Casier takes on the vocal and her deeper and lower register makes the track both smokier and sadder. It's a beautiful cover distilling the breakbeat classic down to its emotional essence.
