  • Couple Looking is the consummation of the back-to-back partnership of Chris Cruse and Massimiliano Pagliara, who have been wreaking havoc on the queer dance musci scene together for a while now. As with most things that involve Pagliara, there's a distinct sense of humour involved (including the addition of Luigi Di Venere to make Couple Looking For Bananas, who recently closed out Panorama Bar in a marathon session) and a springy, light touch that makes the music as effervescent as an Aperol spritz on a muggy afternoon. Like the duo's DJ sets, the tracks on For You are colourful and varied. You've got classic gay circuit hi-NRG house with "For A Snack," whose big, throaty bassline and scintillating synths split the difference between Dark Entries and Running Back. On "For The Remote," dueling acid lines jostle with larger-than-life '80s drum sounds. Cruse and Pagliara love an exaggerated sound effect, which dot their soundscapes like onomatopoeic "pows" and "zaps" in old comic books. "For K+" offers some sleazy nu disco with a particularly heavenly, weightless breakdown, while the dual vocal of "For You" finishes the EP off in crossover pop style. The ornate synth line and the kind of hook you could imagine people lazily humming as they dance their way to the finish line in the afternoon sun. Jumping from mood to mood and idea idea, there's a lot this couple is looking for—but it seems like they've got the skills and equipment to find it all.
