Wheelman - Trompe L'oeil

  • Sumptuously heavy UK broken techno.

  • "Trompe L'oeil," from Glasgow producer Wheelman, has the kind of hard-edged swing that immediately bowls you over—or at least forces you into a screwface. The beat truly qualifies as "broken" techno, staggered in all the right places, and each kick knocks like a hit to the solar plexus. Every sound is coated in just the right amount of delay, making even a simple handclap sound futuristic and mysterious. It's a slice of dubbed-out UK club music that stands up to anything on Timedance or Wisdom Teeth, especially once that underwater vocal starts slicing through. Touching on dubstep, dance hall and drum & bass without giving into any genre completely, "Trompe L'oeil" is a triumphant cut that captures the illusion of its title: churning, psychedelic club music that feels like it's coming at you from all angles, and hard.
