Surusinghe - Skit

  • Future memories of forgotten raves.

  • At just over three-and-a-half minutes, "Skit," by Surusinghe is one of the densest tracks I've heard all year. After a minute of compressed bass stabs and building drums, Surusinghe launches into a breakneck reinterpretation of UK rave music—there are vintage stabs, breakbeats, spinbacks and the hint of uplifting chords. But it's like all these sounds have been reassembled from some distant high-definition future where things are bassier, faster and a little scarier, with the euphoria replaced by anxiety. The only comparison I could think of when listening to "Skit" was Two Shell. Other than a high-gloss polish to the sound design, it isn't that their releases sound very similar, but that both Surusinghe and Two Shell share a penchant for world-building as nostalgic as it is futuristic. The fact that this is only her second release also means we might have a future superstar in our hands.
