Nikki Nair - Can't Wait

  • Nikki Nair goes dance-pop on an oddball summer anthem skewering the corporate lifestyle.

  • Nikki Nair on Studio Barnhus? While not on my 2023 bingo card, the pairing makes a certain amount of sense. Both the label and Atlanta's crown prince of low-end share an irreverent sense of humor and a love of oddball pop (the TLC edit Nair played on HÖR last year, for example, could easily work in an Axel Boman set). Still though, Nair's own productions tend to be a bit heavier than the label's usual fare. "Can't Wait" proves that there isn't much Nair can't do: he's just as good at making poppy house anthems as bottom-heavy club bangers. The production, with its spacey xylophone-like synth and plucked bassline has the whimsy of a Bella Boo (or even DJ Koze) track, but it's Nair's messily Autotuned vocals that makes the whole thing work. His lyrics poke fun at the happy hour seeking masses: "I cannot wait to get fucked up with you / On the beach, in the bar, at the show. / And when I get back, I'll pick up the slack / And the company will continue to grow." Like Kendrick Lamar's "Swimming Pools" being taken by frat bros as an instructional guide, the track is so catchy that his nine-to-five satire might turn into an accidental party soundtrack, or even the sound of the summer.
