  • I came to Melbourne producer and DJ Pretty Girl, AKA Emilia Predebon, through the Human Movement remix of her 2021 track, "Sun Phase." The Sydney producer added a thumping kick, bold, rubbery bassline and stuttering effects to Predebon's voice, rendering the ethereal original a more aggressive, high energy beast. Exploring Predebon's music revealed a young artist with an impressive clutch of releases over the past three years, one who specialises in gentler, trance-tinged lo-fi house. Her sound is distinctively hers: a fusion of gauzy progressive elements and traces of bedroom R&B, often featuring her own airy, purring vocals. Last year she signed to Mall Grab's Steel City Dance Discs and was tapped by Romy, a Pretty Girl fan, to provide a chill (and lovely) remix of her and Fred again…'s "Strong". Predebon's second EP is a generous seven-track record that demonstrates her growing knack for balancing romantic mood pieces with euphoric moments. One Night, One Time is programmed like a mini-DJ set, bookended with atmospheric vignettes "One Night" and "One Time." "Between The Trees" unspools like silk ribbon before Predebon offers two versions of "I Could." The "Open Up" mix recalls the skippy beats and breathy whispers favoured by fellow Melburnians Kllo, before sluggish, ravey arpeggios burrow through the mix. The "Look Inside Mix" takes its cues from Human Movement's "Sun Phase" treatment with a thick bassline, kinetic beats and anthemic looped vocals. Ambient heartbreak track "All Good" was chosen as the lead single, but I prefer the bouncy "A New Light," which shimmers with astral pads and glowing synths that bubble up like sunrise breaking on the horizon. Predebon is embarking on a huge European-UK tour in May, and you can expect some gooey, rapturous scenes as she sings on these tracks live. Her smooth, streamlined sound will probably warrant expansion and diversion in future, but her progression to date indicates she's more than up to the task.
