  • Over the past three years, LOIF has become one of Melbourne's best-kept secrets. But that's all about to change with this nicely-timed release on a hot local label, Animalia, and an upcoming string of shows in Europe. The four psy-laced jams on this new Plunge EP are a robust representation of cutting-edge sounds from Australia's thriving doof scene. Heavy lows, spacey pads, and scientific sound design make Plunge tailor-made for massive, dusty speaker stacks out in the bush. The hypnotic pulses on "Stealth" have the power to capture entire bodies of weary, sunrise-chasing ravers while the quick electro rhythm keeps their blood pumping. LOIF exploits a similar tactic on the title track but at a slower tempo, transferring most of the energy to the kinetic bassline. This blend of proggy psy trance and deep, aquatic electro is having a moment in Australia right now, and not many are doing it better than LOIF. He can also shoot straight, too, as he does on the B-side with "Depth Charge" and "Gloom Rider." The former is pure, uncut psy, while the latter is a breezy, melodic electro cruiser. The EP may be called Plunge, but LOIF's far-out, explorative style feels more like being lifted up into the dim, empty parts of our atmosphere. Up there, with no obstruction, his vast soundscapes come into focus. Not only is LOIF writing introspective odysseys, he's also brandishing some serious gear that he'll soon get to test out away from his home turf.
