- The kind of music Sobolik makes could work at any stage in a club night. In their latest release on Kindergarten, Packet Loss, they're applying the same rationale to four carefully crafted, percussively loaded club tracks. It wasn't a surprise to see the Brooklyn-based artist link up with Kindergarten Records a label known for a riotous style of cross-genre dance music. Packet Loss takes us across the BPM spectrum with the slower-paced "Fk Around And Find Out" and the hectic "Airplane Mode," which is meant to mimic Sobolik's roller-coaster experience of living in New York after lockdown.
The drum programming is the real star of the show on Packet Loss. The patterns in "Airplane Mode" are bouncy compared to the sharp touch of "Update," with the percussion abruptly swinging between the meandering melody and extra kick drum fills. There's also a wide range of textures in Packet Loss, which only adds to its frenetic energy. You get smooth feels in "Cope" from the occasional airy vocals that gently glide past the busy drum lines, but "Fk Around And Find Out" is more on the rough side with its plethora of percussion. Packet Loss gives you a clear view of Sobolik's style: one that's powered by chaotic rhythms and filled with as many drum sounds as possible.
