Baltra - Wabi-Sabi

  • This highlight from Baltra's latest EP chops up CeCe Peniston's "Finally" into a gorgeous jungle reverie.

  • To put it glibly, wabi-sabi is about the beauty of imperfect things. Baltra's take on the Japanese concept sees him dice up a field recording of someone singing CeCe Peniston's "Finally" karaoke-style in the streets of Brooklyn, and then sprinkle it with nostalgic chords and flighty breaks. The sample's beauty comes from its rough edges, the way it puts a DIY spin on a belter of a dance music classic. Wabi-sabi (the philosophy) also contemplates how things become more charming as they age, and since exploding onto the mid-'10s lo-fi house scene with a gloomier sound, Baltra is doing exactly that—celebratory breakbeat that oozes with charm.
