  • Affekt Unit is the collaboration between Neu Verboten and Cocktail d'Amore's Luigi Di Venere, the duo who are also behind the Pomeranian-obsessed label Philoxenia. The fourth release is the first from the two artists themselves, and lead track "Oct-Opus" is a powerful mission statement, blending decades of dance music history together with an '80s bent and sumptuous production. You can hear so many eras co-existing: the bumping basslines of Italo disco, multiple curlicues of squelchy 303 that call back to the '90s, a huge, dominating synth lead that sounds somewhere between industrial and early electroclash. It's a very modern and sleek take on all of these things—especially when the breakbeats hit in the middle—yet seamless enough to not feel retro. It invites you to pull back the layers of each sound, not dense so much as carefully layered like the petals of a half-bloomed tulip.
