Floorplan - We Give Thee Honor

  • Robert and Lyric Hood have gospel techno down to a science, and the formula still sounds great on their latest EP.

  • By now, the name Floorplan is so synonymous with a particular sound—and quality—that their tracks can almost sound workmanlike. Robert and Lyric Hood are always effective, certainly, but they also come with few surprises. The title track on their latest release (which is their third on Classic Music Company) feels as familiar as your favourite sweater. "We Give Thee Honor" is built around choral evangelising and bright gospel piano chords—classic modern-day Floorplan tropes—that sound as likely to raise hands in churches as in Tisno. "Makes Me Wanna" is just as functional, albeit more interesting. Hypnotic, circular synth patterns are disrupted by diva vocals in a seamless blend of Detroit techno and euphoric disco house. The effect is at once uplifting and slightly menacing, duelling moods that tend to mark the best modern Floorplan tracks. On Classic, unsurprisingly, father and daughter play to the Glitterbox set, but it's hard to begrudge a formula this foolproof on the dance floor.
