  • Osaka-based experimentalist Takahiro Kinoshita AKA 99letters makes what he calls "gagaku techno"—industrial-tinged minimal tracks steeped in metallic synths and grimy drone. He's explored this style across several albums, playing around with samples of traditional strings and percussion instruments used to create gagaku, a classical style of music that originates from Japan's imperial courts. This edit of a track taken from his new Makafushigi album feels like the sonic equivalent of dense haze. The protagonist here is a series of broken synth chords, which alone could work nicely in a psychedelic techno DJ set, but alongside distorted static, clangs and other ghostly noises, the track acts more like a horror film score. Kinoshita's ultra-textured arrangement radiates quiet power, locking listeners into its distorted landscape before evaporating without any fanfare.
