Villager - Ow Wow

  • Fresh from Villager's latest EP for Chloé Robinson's Pretty Weird label, "Ow Wow" is a mischievous 2-stepper that sneakily breaks some dance music dos and don'ts. Repetition is what commands the dancefloor, but on "Ow Wow," no four bars are the same. Over a saturated bassline, the Washington DC producer fidgets between cut-up garage vocals, a second bass riding over top and a tense electronic texture that sounds like a rope being stretched to its breaking point. A sandstorm-like haze rolls in to prompt a comedown moment, but before Villager releases the drums and lets you breathe it in, he darts back to that hot-stepping bassline. It's downright dastardly.
