Cousin - Disting

  • The chrome-plated textures of Sydney artist Cousin's music make him a natural match for Montreal label NAFF, and the whole EP is packed with shimmering broken beats that strike a nice balance between the dance floor and more meditative places. "Disting" is my favourite, with a swung groove that combines electronic drums with organic hand percussion, creating a hypnotic rhythm that sounds like slowed-down psytrance, or deconstructed bush doof. The psychedelia is there, but it's also also smouldering and funky, especially when it adopts a more UK-influenced posture in its bouncy midsection. It's rare to reference so many things and yet sound like none of them all at once.
