The Maghreban - Treading Water

  • Spooky hip-hop that'll send shivers through the chill out room.

  • Ayman Rostom's last release under his The Maghreban moniker was the criminally slept-on Connection. There, he fused elements of free jazz, surf rock, house and hip-hop together into a cornucopia of strange dance tracks. If you missed the album, now's a good time to revisit the psilocybin madness of "Got Your Number" with Kenyan singer Nah Eeto. "Treading Water" sees him return to (somewhat) more familiar territory. Rostom has a deep love of hip-hop—check his Doctor Zygote alias—but the fact that he's releasing this under his The Maghreban alias is telling. The track is a dark and melancholy burner just as influenced by '90s ambient techno and downtempo as anything else. The forlorn guitar line and hints of dub make this fall somewhere between Tri Angle and vintage Pork Recordings.
