QuinzeQuinze - Reuts

  • Parisian-Polynesian group QuinzeQuinze is caught between two worlds. Part of their identity is in ori deck, a Tahitian dance scene defined by its dental drill synths and a slow, moombahton-like rhythm unique to the region. QuinzeQuinze varies from that by adding mystical concepts, progressive song structures and metallic textures, and their new track "Reuts" uses disconcerting club sounds to imagine internal armageddon. "Reuts" is centred around a tide of laser beam synths that crashes and foams like an ocean wave. The way they sputter and slip off the stomping beat, coupled with seemingly random sounds of machines whirring and human voices contorting, makes the track feel like a living, breathing entity. Alien voices reveal a world unravelling—"My mind is so cloudy," "Falling in loopholes, having illusions" and "The life we live is a loop." These fretful thoughts are coloured with autotune and flustered breaths, and the melodies dart around as if they’re looking for somewhere safe to hide. Ori deck modernises an ancient Tahitian dance culture and is often the bombastic soundtrack to local nightclubs and parties. QuinzeQuinze creates a dark antithesis on "Reuts," where the blaring sounds and engrossing rhythm is still here, but twisted to create a nightmare in which nature has converged to turn against you.
