- One of Mexico City's best DJs debuts with an EP that boasts five hits and zero misses, plus a remix from Matias Aguayo.
- Paulina Rodriguez has been making a name for herself as a DJ in her native Mexico City and further afield for years now, but it was only during the pandemic that she began to turn her hand to producing. A couple of tidy edits came first (her re-touch of "Naughty by Nature" by Odd Ones Out, and a remix of Head's "Two Tribes"), followed by "Only You Can Save Me," a driving house track with disco diva vocals on Discos Sentimiento. It was solid, but Rodriguez has made a quantum leap in the year since, and her debut EP on Cómeme boasts five hits and zero misses (plus a bullseye remix from Matias Aguayo).
"Rave Soup" is the standout, a barnstormer of a track built around a swaggering, low-slung beat, gritty vocal snatches, windscreen-wiper synths and a deliciously swampy bassline. It might have been made yesterday or 20 years ago, a characteristic it shares with the other tracks here. Lashings of garage, old-school rave and breakbeats feature across the EP, infusing it with vintage big room energy, that, if anything, feels more British than the Latin and North American influences we're used to hearing in Paurro's spirited sets.
Well-worn tropes such as tickling hi-hats and cheeky backspins pop up on "Relax the Rax" and "Putatention"—the latter a piano house jam roughed up with bassy acid squiggles and a potent female vocal loop—but the effect is more nostalgic than derivative, familiar but fresh. Aguayo's remix of "They're Here" also sounds like a lost gem from the ‘90s, stripping back the original in the track's final two minutes to reveal each element packing plenty of punch on its own.
It's rare for a producer to deliver a knockout track on their first EP, let alone five of them—all DJ weapons designed to drop like grenades at parties. With Galavisión, an EP that might just contain more than one future classic, Paurro the producer has officially arrived.
