  • Paryìa is the relatively new label from Leipzig DJ Marie Montexier, and following its first release from German-Turkish artist a.b.u.3.0.3 last year, Dublin-based producer Small Crab debuts on the imprint. A regular on the Irish circuit both as a solo artist and part of her Skin&Blister collective, the German-born talent has developed a sound that dips into several genres, including choppy breaks and dreamy downtempo. Flowing With Honey is no exception: this leftfield, breakbeat-heavy techno with big basslines, organic percussion and long, meandering soundscapes. Take "Yerba Cereal." It's a slow-burning, broken-beat number at 96 BPM with thunking drums and descending keys, but the vibe picks up when warbling vocals tumble into the atmosphere. On Talik's remix, the London-based producer pitches down the vocals, making them sound alien, but adds a cinematic breakdown that brims with angelic chords. It's a moment of bliss before plunging back into the woody percussive thicket. "Bengal Spice" builds up slowly, with bleepy sounds and large, syncopated drums, but the atmosphere changes when siren noises swoop in, adding shades of tumult. And on "Soft Milk," Small Crab dips into a jungle vibe. Short bursts of hi-hats and snares rumble between a hazy, harmonica-led melody, blending floaty and hyperactive energies. Flowing With Honey shows Small Crab’s knack for looking outside the box to make music rich in character and depth, veering from the predictability of usual 4/4 techno patterns. It makes for escapist, get-lost-in-the-vortex kind of club music.
