Buck Bumble - Buck Bumble

  • Is 2022's best speed garage EP a Nintendo game soundtrack?

  • So here's a story: a DJ stumbles upon a track in a video game, they turn a low quality rip into a club edit, pass it along to a pal who plays it out and sets the club off. This isn't a completely unusual story and, as these things go, this is typically where it ends—a novelty track to joke about. But the track in question wasn't the Buck Bumble theme song, and the producer in question wasn't Alec Falconer. After tireless hunting, Falconer tracked down Justin Scharvona, the man behind the Buck Bumble video game soundtrack, and talked him into letting him reissue the compositions with some slight club-friendly modifications. The resulting EP is some of the best speed garage you'll hear all year (even the NME picked up the story). While the title track, with a vocal sample, is the likely favourite, I keep coming back to the B2. The piano keys give the track a slight uneasiness, while the drums are chopped and broken, pitter pattering back-and-forth. The result is not dissimilar to an N64 character trying to make some impossible jump to unlock the final boss.
