  • RTSAK is a new project between French digger DJs Raphaël Top-Secret and Antoine Kogut, where the duo make svelte but humble dance music that sounds a lot like the '80s records they dig up. Think disco, hi-NRG, funk, a little lounge, presented with a Gallic bent and a hint of cool detachment. Take "Give It Up," which feels both earnest and ironic, with its choppy funk guitars and lightly accented vocals that insist, "Let's go out tonight." But the spiraling arpeggio and undeniable bassline really do make it sound like that bargain bin record you say a silent prayer for finding. "The Way They Do" is a cut above, with delay-soaked keys and a perfectly funky groove, both sparse and lush at the same time, and with an amateurish but lovable vocal that reminds me of some of Jack J's recent material. Who better to remix it than the Pender Street Steppers, where Jack and Liam dub out "The Way They Do" with healthy daubs of reverb and delay, and a more laid-back groove, taking the track from the French Riviera to somewhere in the Mojave desert. Like-minded American Benedek shows up to remix "Give It Up," adding a more assertive bassline and '80s-style orchestral hits. Imagine a mustachioed Frenchman making Latin freestyle, and you're almost there—a fun, sometimes silly vibe that makes all four tracks here fun in their own ways.
