Bruxula - A_x (Nicola Cruz Remix)

  • A new collaboration from Cosmic JD and Jerusa Leão is filled with dubby, downtempo wonder and mechanical funk.

  • My favorite Cosmic JD tracks are the ones where he transforms his slanted and acidic take on new minimal into downtempo. Now he leans further into those tendencies on a collaborative EP as Bruxula, alongside fellow South American expat Jerusa Leão. The EP is plaintive but arresting, as Leão's voice and guitar butterflies out of JD's hardware cocoons. The highlight is when JD's schoolyard chum Nicola Cruz shows up to flip "A_x." The original is quiet and cautious, a duet between insect chattering synths and mellow guitar. Cruz dubs it up with a layer of vertiginous reverb and dembow drum programming. On the original, Leão's vocals are whispered, only occasionally interrupted by a sung chorus. Cruz, however, takes that refrain and makes it center stage, highlighting the latent strength of her voice.
