Mount Kimbie - MK 3.5: In Your Eyes & A Deities Encore | Q & Quartz

  • Mount Kimbie go their separate ways—kind of—for an eye-opening EP of leftfield pop and gritty techno.

  • Mount Kimbie have always balanced the elements that make up their sound—Krautrock, fiddly electronics and hip-hop beats—remarkably well, which makes this new EP, splitting the duo into solo projects, perversely thrilling. If you didn't know what Kai Campos and Dom Maker previously brought to the project, now you do. Over the course of what is essentially two singles jammed together, the Mount Kimbie style reaches polar extremes, and the results sound like both a band divided and at its peak. Dom Maker is the crossover one, and lead cut "in your eyes," featuring UK rapper slowthai, feels like a logical follow-up to 2020's mini-blockbuster "feel away," with Danny Brown taking a more energetic spot than James Blake's turn on the older song. When Brown first lands on "in your eyes," it feels like he's dragging the whole track along with his rapid-fire spitting. On the flipside, Campos lays out two tracks that sound like the undergirding of a Mount Kimbie song set free: hissing, bubbling, gurgling beats that could work in a techno set as well as the close-listening, headphones-in-bedroom vibes of past Mount Kimbie records.
