Alarico - Boya

  • Funky but unsettling techno from a label on fire.

  • The fourth release from Mutual Rytm comes from Italian upstart Alarico, whose album-sized EP features plenty of funky, angular techno with odd rhythms and odder samples. The title track, "Boya," is a good example: at first, it almost sounds like tribal techno, or maybe something from Cécille's glory days, but Alarico adds element after element—a belligerent kick drum, an eerie vocal, a vamping two-note chord that has all the subtlety of a shard of broken glass—until the whole thing feels almost anxiety inducing. But as usual for the SHDW & Obscure Shape-run label, it's far from one dimensional, instead inviting you to zone in on its nooks and crannies while everything goes crazy around you.
