On his latest album, the New York producer layers rapidfire drum patterns with philosophical vocal samples for a contemplative take on the genre. With its rolling bassline, cinematic melody and overall atmospheric glaze, "POPULATION: 1" is the kind of track that could enhance even the most mundane moments.
Nigel's sense of pacing is the most distinctive feature here. The first minute is devoted to a mini-monologue, underpinned by fragmented bursts of skittery drums, which makes for a nice build-up to the track's jungle core. Meanwhile, the small pauses in between passages of tight drumming and subsequent sped-up chords add to the drama. "POPULATION: 1" may be the album's shortest track, but it's also one of the deepest.
