  • It'll be a sad day when the seemingly endless archives of '90s techno are finally exhausted—no more 12-inches to repress or DATs to recover. But, as Bosconi Records reminds us on this release from Sound Virus, we're not there yet. Sound Virus was a short-lived dubby techno project from Scott James and Chris Hayne. The pair released a few EPs on their own Lux Recordings while they were also churning out full-throttle trance under the name SYT. Their '90s releases were recently reissued on Mint Recordings, and now Bosconi is going into their vault to dig up some prime unreleased material from the same era. "Matte (#7 Mix)" is even better than the stuff we already know, with a distinct tech house feel. It's got the swung drums and pulsing melody, but it also has the spacious sound design of IDM, and even a ravey piano twirl. In short, it's everything great about the '90s in one track.
