Nyamekye Junction - GMT

  • Dubby, low-frequency vibrations meet West African grooves.

  • Accra trio Nyamekye Junction want the world to know that there's more to Africa's electronic underground than Afrobeats, amapiano and gqom. Their debut EP, on UK label Kitto Records, wastes no time in conveying that message. The first single is rooted in dubbed-out funk but full of experimental flourishes. Pairing traditional instruments such as the frikyiwa and kayamba with samplers, the ensemble explores a range of textures across "GMT." There's spliced drumming that references broken beat, faint reggae echoes, gentle vocals in Twi (a Ghanaian dialect) and English, a fat bassline and manic synths whirring in the background. Full of rhythmic variation, the record reflects Accra's bustling atmosphere and vibrant music scenes.
