Maral - lavender's love

  • "lavender love" is Maral's tribute to spring—and the Iranian celebration of Nowruz—though it sounds more woozy than uplifting, like it's still groggy and stumbling awake from a long winter slumber. In just under three minutes the track captures a lot of what is so intriguing about the Los Angeles artist: live-sounding drums that fall into place with an industrial strength thud, eerie, pitched-down vocals that waft across the stereo spectrum and a distinct (post)punk edge in the occasional skronk and the tense acoustic bass that ticks underneath "lavender's love" like its tell-tale heart. It's brief and ambiguous, yet alluring, its eerie melodies capturing something between yearning and belonging—something strong enough to make you press replay right when it finishes.
