Def Inc - Acid Rock/Stripped Down Funk

  • Def Inc are a Manchester, UK based crew who first formed in 1998 and were one of the first acts to bring the sounds of breakbeat into the Manchester scene. Their first remix came in the form of Coldplay's "God Put A Smile On My Face" and saw itself included on various compilations including "10 Years Of Cafe Del Mar" and the "Perfecto Chill" compilations. Now their talents are being enlisted by Aquasky who are in a transitional phase with their labels and to continue with 777's new outlook, Def Inc have produced two dancefloor smashers with a party rocking funk attitude. Side A. Acid Rock Opening up with a b-boy flavoured breakbeat with traditional synth stabs and electro arpeggios, it's easy to see that Acid Rock is heading straight for the dancefloor. Layered on top are funky wah-wah guitar twangs and disco-ey synths. Once the first breakdown hits they drops it all in favour of a rock guitar riff (rock guitars infused with acid house and electro... let's call it Acid Rock!) which then builds up into a highly prominent funk guitar lick, throbbing bassline and turntable scratches. Side B. Stripped Down Funk The flip opens up with a similar style break, but with slightly different programming - one can't deny the underlying essence of funk. This is combined with electro-ey stabs and blips and a quirky electro hook played on top. During the build up they introduce the vocal sample from which the tune gets its name and then it's an all out growly bassline affair bringing back all the elements from the intro coupled with various funk and electro licks thrown in. It doesn't take long for them to introduce a synth riff which brings melody to the tune and takes charge until the end.
