Rove Ranger - Soap

  • Addictive, melodic techno inspired by the '90s and made for right now.

  • One of Rove Ranger's first records was called Rave Memories, which gives you an idea of what to expect here. But on his latest, Soap, for Croatian label Out Of Place, he's not looking back to breakbeats and hoovers, but something more in line with the techno of today's dance floors (and the '90s). The pacy kick drums and ropy muscle—that madly tunneling bassline underneath is pure sinew—make for a foundation between early Regis and LFO, but it's the synth stab, contorted into an uplifting motif that ascends into infinity, that really grabs the ear. "Soap" is like an endurance race with no finish, the kind of techno that actually energizes you even as it wear you out.
