Brainsurfers - HMSB

  • NorthSouth label heads Sam Bangura and Harry McCanna team up for some tantalizingly sparse tech house.

  • Sam Bangura's debut 12-inch from last year was an outstanding piece of contemporary tech house, sinewy in the low-end and surprisingly airy as melodies wafted in and out of the tracks. Things are even sparser on his collaboration with fellow NorthSouth label head and fabric resident Harry McCanna, under the name Brainsurfers. The drums on both tracks are muscular with just a bit of skip, as the duo give us something for the body and the mind. Which poison you pick is likely down to when you're playing. "HMSB 1" is the more cerebral cut, with minor chords and darting bleeps adding some deep in the afters edge. The other track is a bit bolder, suitable for prime time, thanks to its second-wave Detroit chords and a forlorn synth solo.
