- One of my favorite things about German techno producer Thomas Hessler is how his music embraces old-school techno without resorting to nostalgia. Any of the four tracks on his new digital EP for Ben Sims' label would work in a current-day techno set—heavy and pacey—but there's a certain old-soul flavor to it, something that harkens back to each of techno's past decades, some separately and some all at once. "Intermission," the title cut, is a perfect example: with its simple slippery chord stabs, it's a dead-ringer for early (or honestly, modern) Robert Hood, but the bits of white noise, healthy reverb and killer squelchy breakdown mark it as a product of the 2022 scene. It has a little something for everyone.
