  • "Loving" is new, but it isn't exactly new. It's been a staple for some DJs going back to at least 2020. The inspiration behind isn't new, either: like so much dance music coming out of the UK right now, it's throwback to the early days of hardcore and rave. But instead of pastiche, Cromby chops and dices the elements into a dialed-in summer festival banger, taking those classic rave stabs and attaching them to a descending bassline. It's joyous with just the right amount of tension. Far from a simple E'd-up reverie, "Loving"'s deceptively downcast melody makes it all the more addictive, especially when Cromby builds up a big, staticky melody only to let it fling off in the distance—or introduces an industrial strength hat-snare-kick combo every once in a while. The remix from Shed's Head High project only notches up that bottom-heavy power, focusing on the repetitive vocal tic until those rave stabs come back in, pitched-up and bubbly like a proto-happy hardcore track. It's hard to pick a favorite of the two versions. You could probably get away with playing both in one set. Despite its dismissive title, "Acid Trifle" is nearly as good as the colossal A-side it supports. This one's all about the hand percussion, which whips up an irresistible, windswept groove to back up an acid line that zig-zags and loops like the squelchy haywire lead in "Ray Of Light." Cromby's not reinventing the wheel here—instead he's zeroing right in on what makes unabashedly big room music so pleasurable in the first place.
