mayo - Dystopian Dialect

  • The newest addition to Carista's United Identities label, mayo crafts industrial-inspired techno on a self-built modular synth. Her debut EP feels opaque and heavy, especially "Dystopian Dialect," which sounds like it's been submerged in layers of oily sediment. Here, the Amsterdam-based artist infuses elements of '80s New Beat into a slow-moving chugger that's unapologetically dark. She sparingly indulges in acid and EBM, keeping their swirling and electro effects to a minimum, opting instead to create space on the texture-heavy record. Through restraint and narrative, mayo makes distortion sound acutely defined.
