  • At this point the question must be asked: can Dego do no wrong? You'd think that such a prolific creator would hit a snag, or get a bit boring, at some point. But that's not the case for the broken beat legend. Over the years he's developed a signature sound you can recognize from the moment the first beat hits. On the latest 7-inch from the Sounds Familiar crew, we get two quick slices of groove that should satisfy even the discerning funkateer. The Afro-Caribbean stylings of "Drop It Now! Pick It Up!" would make George Clinton proud. A thick bassline with funky synth work noodling over top gives the song a strong Bernie Worrell vibe. The organ is a nice touch, keeping the groove going while the jazz chord progressions play with the slinky beat. (It seriously sounds like a West Indian P-funk cover.) "Too Humid" is a more straightforward piece of dance music, deep house as performed by an in-the-pocket funk band. The groove is steady and the soulful piano chords lend a dreamy, loopy feeling—a showcase for the heights that house music can reach in the hands of a proper and dedicated musician.
