Alex Wilcox & Anetha - It's okay to cry

  • Wonderfully oddball techno from Alex Wilcox on Anetha's label.

  • "It's okay to cry" is the fifth release on Anetha's Mama Told Ya label. Dallas-born artist Alex Wilcox is in the spotlight this time, offering up three solo tracks and a collaboration with Anetha. Wilcox is a skilled producer—some will know him from his Breakdown videos on Youtube, where he deconstructs tracks from all kinds of artists, including Lil Nas X and Aphex Twin. Others might have heard Wilicox's housier side with DJ Holographic earlier this year on Hitchhiker. On "It's okay to cry" however, Wilcox gets weird, in the best possible way. On "Funky Blender," well, we could be inside a blender. A squishy bassline tumbles through while breathy vocals add a twitchy energy, which amplifies on "RESPOND!," which boasts drums that would suit a Thunderdome rave. But the vibe is more Dance Mania, with giggly vocals from Wilcox and rapid-fire handclaps. The Anetha collaboration "Paris, Texas" punches through with a staccato synth line that winds between delicate, almost celestial notes providing breathing space—like slipping into an ambient room in a club—before launching back into chaos. "BOO." swoops in with unnerving, high-pitched vocals that squeak over an understated bassline, a solid curveball to throw during a peak-time set. Wilcox is, if nothing else, adventurous on "It's ok to cry." He puts playful melodies through the wringer and straps them to unpredictable melodies, creating a wild four-track trip through eccentric moods and zany sounds. It fits comfortably into the discography of Anetha's increasingly intriguing label.
