- Although My Star Is Acid is the first EP from Aliana, she's already become a central figure in the thriving Ukrainian house and techno scene. While this Ukrainian scene is clustered around Kyiv (and clubs like Closer), Aliana has been instrumental in building a scene in her hometown Lviv, throwing parties with her all-women collective MUZA, contributing to compilations on labels including EYA, and conjuring up dreamy electro as half of the Midibasics. These accolades are on full display across her debut EP. Aliana offers five acidic techno and electro cuts perfect for both sunrise and those outlandish moments when the sun sets again at the afters.
There are two modes of 303 on My Star Is Acid: claustrophobic late night bangers and warm analogue grooves for the morning hours. The former features the peak-time electro rush of "Gravitational Pole" and the anxious creep of "Galaxy Orchestra" where the 303s is at its darkest and most vicious. But Aliana also knows how to let the light in. The delay on the chords in her collaboration with Atlanta-based producer Titino, "In My Dreams," coupled with the skyward-reaching arpeggio, make it a track for Sunday service in the Church Of Acid. The title track shares this sense of the celestial, but the 303 is delicate, almost brittle, as it pirouettes across a breakbeat.
Growing up in the late '80s and early '90s in Ukraine, Aliana has discussed how music was not just vital, but nearly sacred, in her household. Her dad would find ways to buy banned records and tape pirate radio stations. This cultivated in Aliana what she describes as "reverent attitude toward music" and a "mystical exploration of music beyond what is known or easily accessible." This reverence and mysticism comes across loudly in My Star is Acid. The EP is a tribute to the patron saints of the dance floor as Aliana's 303 burst with color like church stained glass.
