December - The Day Of The Hunter

  • Sleek, technoid post-punk.

  • December is one of my favourite, if often overlooked, producers in the post-punk techno milieu, with an ear for abrasive sounds that hardly ever veer into macho or noise territory. His upcoming album allows him to flex some of his more mid-tempo muscles, and closing track (and first single) "The Day Of The Hunter" is a good sign of what awaits. It's couched somewhere between early Raime and no wave, every delay-drenched drum hit hitting like a rock splashing in water, with ominous basslines and a vocal that owes more than a little to Joy Division's "Shadowplay." Sure, December's working within a mold here, but the techno-inspired sound design and sleek aesthetic adds a panache that makes it more than just pastiche.
