  • Portuguese artist Mesqit's latest EP is inspired by the concept of afterlife and coffin texts in ancient Egypt. Scored by fractured Baile funk, reggaeton, taut Latin percussion and haunting synths, his version of life after death is pretty appealing. With most tracks around the 100 BPM range, the entire record has the space to create both suspense and thrilling pleasure. "Sarcophagus" is built around a blaring flute sample that feels straight out of traditional Egyptian wedding music yet feels ideal for perreo, a Puerto Rican style of dance and music. It's a lethal track but the gyrating rhythm reminds us that we're very much alive.
