Obongjayar - Message In A Hammer

  • Nigeria-hailing, London-based Obongjayar hits hard in both the literal and physical sense.

  • "Obong" translates to "king" and "-jayar" to "junior." The juxtaposition of might and minority lives well in Steven Omoh, with an immense vocal range that reaches from the pit of his soul up to the loftiest of falsettos. While messages tucked into glass bottles and thrown out to sea have historically been reserved for those in distress, Obongjayar turns the tide and refuses to be victimised, reinstating his power through martial percussion, sinister sirens and a killer hook. The enemies he wages war against here are of the governmental sort—who he acknowledges have used, abused, shamed and stolen from all of us. On this scintillating three-minute manifesto, he primes us for an equally unbridled debut album to be released next year, set to showcase the true power of speaking out against systemic oppression.
