Trilogy Inc. - 313

  • A new Nu Groove record worthy of the label's sterling name.

  • I always feel a bit wary when a pioneering dance music institution announces a comeback—they can range from paint-by-numbers fodder to out-of-touch, miles from an imprint's heyday. This doesn't appear to be case with Nu Groove's ongoing relaunch under the Defected banner, at least judging from Trilogy Inc.'s "313." In fact, I had to stop myself in my tracks to immediately ID it when I first heard it in DJ Minx's recent RA Podcast. A new project from veteran British outfit K-Klass, Trilogy Inc. avoids the usual pitfalls by fully embracing the retro. Imagine a Murk crawler by way of Sheffield bleep: cavernous bass thuds beneath longing vocals, scratching a perfect spot where bassbin abuse and pining sentimentality walk hand-in-hand. Playing to both label and artist's strengths, "313" slots into the Nu Groove catalogue alongside classics of yore, a reminder of how timeless the label's output truly is.
