Jlin - Embryo

  • The first taste of Jlin's new EP sounds like an eight-armed drummer on a mission.

  • My first thought on hearing "Embryo" was that Jlin has gone techno. But that only lasts for about a minute, before the track nose-dives into a frantic, fractured rhythm, throwing every drum sound at the wall and seeing what sticks. (You can tell it was written for an ensemble—either that, or an eight-armed drummer.) There are orchestral hits, gleaming triangle hits and some snares and hats that sound like they wandered over from a trap song and couldn't quite find how to fit in. It's frenzied yet totally controlled, the kind of rhythmic dexterity that Jlin has only improved at over the years. It's a bit footwork, a bit Autechre, a bit Robert Hood. But in reality, it's just Jlin, one of the most singular artists in the world of percussive music.
