- Detroit's Malik Alston started his musical journey as a church gospel singer, and it's clear the genre has deeply influenced his productions. There's a gentle euphoria and heavy emotional depth to the forthcoming album with his band Painted Pictures, which features local veterans Craig Huckaby (brother of the late Mike) and Roy Davis, Jr. The title track starts off as jazz but its roots in house music becomes immediately clear two minutes in. With Huckaby building groove on percussion, Alston delivering soulful notes on keys, slivers of trumpet and cascading vocals, the record is pure Detroit magic.
