Ryogo Yamamori - Shelter From The Rain

  • Off-kilter techno from a low-key master.

  • Ryogo Yamamori is a quietly brilliant producer with a knack for bringing in unconventional elements without disturbing a track's flow. Take "Drumedge," from his latest EP, Shelter From The Rain. It's a whirl of hypnotic, almost psychedelic hand percussion, but Yamamori never loses sight of the central, all-powerful thud (it reminds me of Donato Dozzy in that regard). But, for me, the title track is the choice cut, with its big, honking bass sweeps, halfway between a Reese bassline and someone gingerly ripping off a velcro strap. It has all the elements of a big-room banger, but Yamamori holds it at a restrained pace, making even this heavy techno sound meditative, almost peaceful.
