  • While he'll always be thought of as a pioneer of dub techno, over the last decade, Moritz von Oswald has made his most experimental music alongside an ever-changing ensemble. This milieu includes Max Loderbauer, Vladislav Delay, François Kevorkian, Ricardo Villalobos and the late Tony Allen, to name just a few. The latest incarnation, with Laurel Halo and the jazz drummer Heinrich Köbberling, resembles an outré jazz trio. On "Chapter 6," the latest single from their forthcoming album, Dissent: Chapter 1 - 10, Halo handles modal piano voicings while Köbberling barely strikes his kit, giving rise to a mood of simmering restraint. von Oswald, meanwhile, seems to cover both the low-end—a delayed bass line somehow evocative of a ghostly schaffel rhythm—and a myriad of floating synth experiments. Just like Can in the studio, what we hear here is an edited version of a long and heady improv jam, established players questing for new plateaus.
